I had a great discussion recently with a friend on what ‘hooked’ us on music.  Without that initial hook, most will simply pack up their instrument the last day of class senior year, put it in the closet, and think, “Maybe my kid will need it one day…”

At a conference I saw a presenter ask his audience to identify an object. On the display was a typical LeBlanc clarinet case.  Being that he was speaking to a room full of music educators we immediately responded “a case!”  He quickly corrected us.  “This case belonged to my oldest son.  Upon graduation this is no longer and instrument case, but an instrument coffin.”  For whatever reason that sentiment really hit home for me.  This crafted wood and metal had for years been used to create beautiful things, and now it’s silent.  Again, why do some of our students keep going and…
